Done - at last
I have finally finished River Rock...having thought this would be a quick knit, it took me ages.
I did not much like knitting with beads - something about having the weight of the beads on the yarn, and having to keep pushing them along out of my way. I also am not so keen on the way the beads hang - but don't know if this is due to using lighter yarn. I also had (and still have) problems with the beads migrating out of the 'rocks'...I twisted both the knits and the purls on each side of the rocks - which helps, but does not prevent the problem.
Having said all that - finished item looks pretty nice. I did not exactly follow the pattern; I faded the beads out of the center section and then faded them in again pretty randomly.

I really like your scarf. I'm a bit confused about how I hold the diamond shapes of beads in place. Is there a pattern somewhere, where I can see more detail please?
Thank you.

The full scarf pattern is in a book called "No Sheep for You" and the individual pattern is available at Sivia Harding's site for 6 dollars http://www.siviaharding.com/patterns/river_rock_scarf/
Sivia wrote a good article about beading available on Knitty http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATseducedbybeads.html
Strangely however she does not describe the technique she used in her scarf which you can find described here: http://www.ehow.com/how_2218262_knit-with-beads.html
Basically you slip the beads (1, 2, or 4) into place between the stitches - where they just "sit". In the scarf, on the knit rows she instructed you to knit until 1 stitch before you want the bead "rock" then knit into the back of that stitch, then place the bead or beads, then knit into the back of the next stitch. This keeps the knitting a bit tighter. On the purl rows she did not twist the stitches.
